Assignment:
The project target was to
develop a middle class, price effective
IP phone working on the H.323 protocol with the option of other VoIP
protocols implementation in the future. The phone was supposed to
include 2x Ethernet, graphic display, G.723 and G.729 codec support. The
total costs were not to exceed 60 thousand EUR, with the development
time shorter than 15 months since the contract signature. Production
price of the telephone was to be lower than 80USD.
Solution:
Our HW
specialists have made the preliminary analysis of the available chipsets
of the platforms that would satisfy the client's requirements. The
analysis of the appropriate platforms took cca 4-6 weeks. Based on the
analysis foundings, Intel's xSCALE PXA255 platform has been chosen as
the most appropriate one since it had acceptable support in OS Linux and
since the total costs of the product's BOM file were under the given
limit of 80USD. After the acceptation of the selected platform from the
side of the client, the development as such began. The development has
been proceeding simultaneously - SW (OS, middleware, application itself
and GUI) and HW – PCB development, housing development. Within 4 months,
the first prototype of the phone including the basic OS based on Linux
has been ready. Consequently, the work on the housing, PCB
optimalization, and mainly development, testing and SW debugging (the
driver for keyboard and display of the phone, codecs G.723 and G.729
have been written and debugged, the implementation of the H.323v4
protocol itself has been done. Furthermore, the application has been
written as well as GUI). Another department has been working on the
housing design and promo materials writing + certification from the
point of view of EMC and CE compatibility. In total, 4 prototypes of the
phone has been made in horizon of 12 months. The work on the product has
been finished after 14 months, while all the criteria set by the client
has been met. The client received production documentation as well
as the BOM file and started with the serial production of the IP
telephone.
Realization time:
(2003-2004) - 14 months.
