USB Phone -
SoftPhone
Assignment:
A customer – VoIP services provider – requested
development of a reasonably priced USB Telephone together with the
application for PC, thanks
to which a client could use the services of the operator and the
service of VoIP telephony. The customer had a specific requirement
for the telephone's design - it was supposed to be a simple and
elegant table phone. SoftPhone application was required to have a
unique intuitive user interface, H.323 protocol support, and support
of G.729 a G.723 codecs.
Solution:
Voipac made and analysis of the appropriate
platforms and chipsets, which satisfied the requirements for the
functionality, development speed, and total costs per device. At the
same time, an appropriate design and construction of the phone has been
chosen. When the proposed platform has been approved by the client, we
prepared a preliminary BOM file (bill of material). The expected total
cost per unit was within the budget boundaries set by the client thus
Voipac began with the development of the telephone and PC SoftPhone. It
was necessary to design the schematics of the PCB, prepare a plastic
housing with the necessary mechanical parts. Another team has been
working on the SoftPhone application (Visual C++) + necessary driver for
OS (Windows + Linux) for the product management.
The first version of the HW prototype has been done in three months
since the project beginning. The work on the SoftPhone lasted 8 months
in total. After the first 5 months, we had the HW together with the
extensive phone manual and a cardboard package as well as the program
itself ready. The product has been handed over to the client within the
given timeframe. At the same time, we have not exceeded the development
budget + we were even able to drive the production cost of the device
down compared to the original plan.
Realization time:
(2003-2004) - 14 month
